Getting dressed for a wedding is not easy. If you're not in the crowd, you may not know much about acceptable clothing. If you've gone a lot, the procedures will likely be different on each one, and even if you haven't, you probably don't want to wear the exact same thing to every party. Before you start researching your wardrobe or committing to a shopping spree, read this helpful guide. Whether you need to decipher common dress codes or just want some ideas to spice up your look, you've come to the right place.
white tie
The white tie is formal as it is and not very popular these days. But, if you are invited to this type of event, wearing the part is a must.
For men, the dress code is strict: a black coat, a white jacket, a white formal shirt, a white tie, and "white gloves if you're feeling luxury," says Corey. For the feet, wear black shoes (opera shoes).
For women, opinions differ, but it is safe to wear a long formal dress. Polk suggests thinking about your dress size, because plus-size dresses can be hard to sit on. It's best to wear heels, but be sure to walk in them. It's better to wear a shorter length than to wear tangles all day.
black tie
Evening wear is the most appropriate here. For men, that usually means a dark tuxedo, a white shirt, a matching bow tie, bow tie, and suspenders (optional), Corey says. Dress shoes, such as oxfords, are appropriate.
Women can wear a long dress or an elegant cocktail dress. Again, heels are the best.
A black tie is optional, if in doubt, stick with a black tie, but if you prefer more casual attire, you can. According to Cory, men can wear a dark suit instead of a tuxedo and a conservative tie instead of a bow tie.
semi formal (cocktail)
According to Corey, the name means connection. "In the range of wedding dresses, semi-formal wear falls somewhere between formal and informal." In her opinion, men's suits can be worn with or without a tie.
Semi-formal is considered "too elegant," but admits, once again, that women are a great deal of flexibility. Cocktail dresses or elegant sequins almost always work.
What is appropriate to wear to a wedding as a guest, Nowadays anything is possible. We've seen couples send out color palettes on their wedding invitations, which their guests have been asked to wear accordingly.
We've seen others create Pinterest boards of fashion ideas to inspire attendees. Cory, pictured above at her wedding in Italy, shares: "Our wedding dress was comfortable, and we asked our guests to draw inspiration for their outfits from the Tuscan landscape." Most party-goers showed up in neutral colors, like this one.
